Those who dance are considered insane by those who can't hear the music.
George Carlin
We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.
Friedrich Nietzsche
After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels.
Ann Richards
Dance is the hidden language of the soul.
Martha Graham
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.
Martha Graham
Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.
Martha Graham
Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance.
Oprah Winfrey
I don't want people who want to dance, I want people who have to dance.
George Balanchine
You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.
Merce Cunningham
I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to to dance better than myself.
Mikhail Baryshnikov
You were wild once. Don't let them tame you.
Isadora Duncan
Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.
Twyla Tharp
It takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer.
Shanna LaFleur
If you look at a dancer in silence, his or her body will be the music. If you turn the music on, that body will become an extension of what you're hearing.
Judith Jamison
You don't enter a dance studio and say "I can't do that." If you do, then why are you in the studio in the first place?
Judith Jamison
The problem is not making up the steps but deciding which ones to keep.
Mikhail Baryshnikov
Dance is the only art of which we ourselves are the stuff of which it is made.
Ted Shawn
Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.
Alvin Ailey
Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire.
George Bernard Shaw
Dancing faces you towards Heaven, whichever direction you turn.

More Info

Class Duration:
Classes are typically 30-45 minutes long, meeting once per week.

Registration Fee:
There is a non-refundable $10 registration fee due when you sign up for classes. This fee is per account.

Class Pricing:
The Newton Dance Company has a flat fee per month for classes. This fee is based on the number of classes each student is taking and how many students are from the same household. Here is a breakdown of the costs:

1 student, 1 class: $40/month.
Second student or class on the same account is $39/month for first class, $32/month for the second.
Each additional class or student on the same account: $29/month.

Some examples:
1 student, 1 class = $40/month.
1 student, 2 classes = $71/month ($39 for the first class, $32 for the second class).
2 students, 1 class each = $71/month ($39 for the first student, $32 for the second student).
2 students, 2 classes each = $129/month ($39 for the first student, $32 for the first student's second class, $29 for the second student, and $29 for the second student's second class).
All other combinations follow this same pattern.

The fees are due the first week of classes each month. Late fees are assessed on any balances unpaid after the 10th of each month and are strictly enforced.

Make-ups:
There are no make-ups for missed classes. Additionally, there are no make-ups for classes cancelled by NDC, unless deemed necessary, and if offered will be at the sole discretion of NDC.

NDC Tech

NDC is a technologically progressive company, from the music to the production of our shows.

All music for dance instruction at NDC is played from an Apple MacBook Pro laptop remotely controlled using an iPhone or an iPad, giving Allison the freedom to roam the dance area while teaching and still have full control of the music.

All performances use playback of digital files directly from an Apple MacBook Pro via a USB connection to the mixing console.

All music used by NDC is licensed and purchased through legitimate storefronts. Peer to peer sites are never used. Do your part. Don't steal music!

NDC also employs a variety of LED lighting fixtures in their productions, providing a palette of over 16 millions colors with very little power draw. This allows the lighting to be precisely matched to costumes if desired. The lighting is controlled via wired and wireless DMX from the same computer that controls the music. Senior Company shows use software that allows the lighting cues to be tightly integrated with the music, allowing complex, consistent, and professional productions. Additionally, NDC has the capability to connect to and control ANY lighting system that uses the DMX protocol.

Each year we strive to build on our LED lighting inventory to add even more impact to our shows.

NDC Tech- the tools

NDC uses the best technologies whenever possible; from the music editing and playback, to how data is managed, to how images are captured, right down to how the show programs are created. NDC is a Microsoft-free company. NDC uses Apple Macintosh computers and iOS devices exclusively and use software solutions from Apple, FileMaker, Broderbund, Affinity, Anystone Technologies, Inc., Native Instruments, Indeeo Inc., Pixelmator, Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU), Bias Inc., hexler, enttec, and db audioware.

This website was created using RapidWeaver from RealMac Software, plug-ins from YourHead, and theme templates and stacks from Elixir Graphics, Joe Workman, DooBox, Nimblehost, RapidWeaver Central,1LD, Stack Maniac, and Stacks4Stacks.

All images are captured using Canon EOS DSLR camera bodies, flashes, and lenses. Studio portraits are shot using AlienBees strobes and Photoflex reflectors and umbrellas. Video is captured using Canon Professional HD video cameras.

NDC shows are produced using equipment from Mackie, Electro-Voice, Pro-Co, Neutrik, Mogami, Shure, Akai, and Apple. We use lighting equipment from American DJ and Blizzard Lighting. We use Enttec and dbaudioware solutions for DMX lighting control and show control. Custom TouchOSC layouts are used to remotely control lighting and show control software.

Background

Started as a dream when a Junior in High School, Allison's love and passion for dance couldn't be contained. In 1990, Allison accomplished two things: she planted the seed and SJDC was born at South Jefferson, and she started teaching on her own in the community in the form of Summer sessions.

After college, from 1995 to 2005, Allison was running a full-fledged business Monday through Thursday at her Studio, and also running the SJDC Thursday through Saturday at the High School. In 2005 after a total of 15 years working at the High School, Allison left SJDC to pursue bigger ambitions with her studio, as classes were growing. Studio classes were expanded to handle demand and her own performance-based Company was formed. Allison performs much of the same duties as before, but now under one roof and done without the restrictions and constraints that come with working in the public school system. As a result, Allison has more opportunity to push her creativity in Modern/Contemporary choreography, one of her favorite styles.

Allison has a reputation for intricate, layered choreography that push composition and technique. Married with unique music choices, creative lighting and costuming, and an overall polished production, NDC shows stand out.

Experience

South Jefferson Central School Dance Company (SJDC):

1990: SJDC Co-Founder
1990-1993: Co-Director
1994-1995: Guest choreographer while attending college
1995-2005: sole Director of Company after college
*note: from 1990-2005, Allison created and choreographed over 250 dances for the SJCS Dance Company.

Self-Owned Studio- history of events (in parallel with the work for SJDC up to 2005):

1990-1995: Summer dance sessions, Adams and Rodman locations
Fall 1995: Attitude in Motion Dance Studio created in Adams, NY
After 10 years, it was time for a change...
2005: Studio name changed to The Newton Dance Company
2005-Present: Combination of Studio and Company work

Company

After 10 years of being sole director of the SJDC, Allison decided to fulfill a longtime dream- start a performance-based Company of her own, free from the constraints that come with working within a school system. Starting in 2005, the NDC Sr. and Jr. Companies were formed. In 2006, a mini Company was added. The Company has been restructured many times over the years and is now just known as "Senior Company".

The Company performs an annual Christmas Show in late November early December, and has a large Spring performance held in April or May. Over the past several years, the Company has participated in Watertown-based Dance World's "Dance 4 Life" Relay for Life Team benefit for the American Cancer Society. Each year the NDC Company Dancers raised over $2000 for this great cause and provided the sound system for the event.
